Hey, I'm Lucas Lopes.
I’m a visual artist and illustrator, and my work is centred on the relationship between image, poetry, and making. My practice explores how images can open spaces for reflection, imagination, and attention to the world around us.
Originally from Brazil and based in Barcelona, I work with a range of materials and techniques, including watercolour, natural pigments, acrylic painting, paper sculptures, murals, and visual installations for libraries and cultural spaces. Alongside my artistic practice, I work as an illustrator, collaborating with publishers, theatre projects, and music initiatives. Over the years, I have developed projects with institutions such as Sesc São Paulo, Itaú Cultural, Caixa Cultural, and Fábricas de Cultura.
I also have extensive experience in art education, having worked for more than 10 years with children, young people, and adults in schools, cultural centres, and independent programs. This experience is present in my courses, The World Beyond Words and Art Practices to Disconnect and Reconnect, where I guide participants in creating paper characters and small visual narratives, combining technique, process, and visual poetry.

Module 1&2
I will introduce the courses’s purpose and creative direction while presenting key inspirations for character creation. You’ll explore the essential materials paper, watercolor, and colored pencils and learn how to prepare and test textures and colors to build a strong foundation for your work.
Module 3&4
We will explore the concept of the inner world within each character and how small visual narratives give meaning to every piece. You’ll learn to sketch and build the base structure of a character while discovering pop-up techniques, openings, and layered effects that bring inner landscapes to life through depth and movement.
Module 5&6
I will guide you through the complete character creation process, from step-by-step illustration, cutting, and assembly to developing three poetic characters: The House, The Garden/Tree, and The Sky. You’ll then focus on finishing touches, refining details, and preparing your work for presentation, before sharing your creations with the community.
Module 7&8
This creative journey bridges the gap between the infinite and the personal, beginning with watercolor exercises that use fluidity and intuition to capture the expansive atmosphere of the universe. The focus then shifts to the tangible world, employing photography and collage to observe and assemble fragments of your surroundings into expressive storytelling compositions.
Module 9&10
These modules invite you to bridge inner reflection with the natural world by combining meditative drawing with the creation of organic pigments. You will develop creative confidence through rhythmic mark-making and mapping personal journeys, before grounding your practice in the environment by harvesting and experimenting with colors sourced directly from the garden.
Module 11&12
You will translate personal narratives into three-dimensional forms by exploring the intersection of domestic space and individual identity. By transforming simple materials into small paper sculptures and dynamic pop-up art, you will discover how everyday environments and inner emotions can inspire meaningful structures that reflect your unique creative journey.
